Book Review: The Third Reich in Power, by Richard Evans

For anyone interested in learning more about how and why Hitler was able to transform Germany, this is a superb book. Richard Evans is one of Britain's foremost experts on German history, and served as an expert witness in the trial of holocaust denier, David Irving, in 2000. This book follows his survey of Hitler's rise to power, The Coming of the Third Reich (Penguin, 2004).
GCSE students, especially those aiming for an A*, will find this book particularly useful. It deals with Hitler's policies towards women, young people and Jews in much more detail than any textbook, and also provides a fantastic analysis of the economic policies of the Third Reich. Evans exposes the brutality and contempt for law which lay at the heart of Hitler's Germany. He also portrays the Nazi goverment as a thoroughly modern, radical force, despite their attempts to pose as conservatives. Finally, Evans stresses the centrality of war in all that Hitler did.
An excellent read for the Easter break.
